Within the new constitution that I have created, I have created laws made to please the people as well as myself. First, I thought about what brings people together. The most important thing for many in France and Europe is religion, so I have created laws to create unity between those of different religions. I have abolished the idea of estates so that there is no longer a division between the three. However, in doing this, I have limited the freedom of speech and individual rights of others. I have reinstated slavery so that my empire may be built more effectively, and I have limited speech so that nobody may oppose me, as if they ever would. O diary, for I yearn for the rest of Europe to be mine.
Translator's Notes/Summary: Napoleon always sided by whoever would benefit him the most in the moment. This is not only true for Robespierre, but is also true for his people. He allowed certain rights such as religious freedom, but also censored his people and allowed slavery so that his job as emperor would be easier.
I have a feeling that Russia is starting to form an alliance with England. To rectify this possible alliance, it is finally time for me to take control of Russia. I have yearned for Russia for ages, and yet never thought to take it over until now. They will never see it coming. As I speak, my army of 420,000 and I are gradually marching into the heart of it's territory, as we have not found much yet. Towns and villages have been burnt to the ground and there is nothing to pillage. I believe that the Russians are playing nothing more than a dirty trick on us, but I know they are hiding somewhere. Soon they shall all die by the hand of the Great Napoleon and experience the power of my iron fist. O Diary, I can't wait for Russia to finally be mine!
Translator's Notes/Summary: Russia's biggest weapon isn't some kind of military force, but rather it's harsh frigid weather. Nobody in history has seemed to learn from this fact.
Invading Russia two years ago did not go as planned and I still feel the effects of it today. It is today that I must temporarily surrender and resign my rule, under the Prussian and Austrian Treaty of Fontainbleau. These people. These horrific, dirty, people expecting to run my kingdom. Who dare they? It is embarassing that I, the great Napoleon, even have to consent to such a treaty. It would be even more embarassing for me to fight back and lose. The French people yearn for Europe to be theirs, and I am their only ruler who can do them justice. I offered them my heir as leader and they refused. The treaty specifies that I may still keep my former title as emperor, but it also states that I shall be exiled to the island of Elba where I will spend the rest of my days. O Diary, how I wish to one day destroy all that oppose me.
Translator's Notes/Summary: Changed "Je leur ai proposé mon héritier en tant que chef et ils ont refusé." (I offered them my heir as chief and they refused.) To "I offered them my heir as leader and they refused" for clarity's sake. His son would later die from tuberculosis at the age of 21.
The island of Elba has been worse than I thought. The mayor embarassingly handed me partial control of the it, which is nothing more than a small industrial pit of garbage. There are a few mines and palaces, and while I have been allowed to create my own council of state similar to in France, I feel as if Elba is nothing more than a prison to me. I cannot play a significant role in this government or conquer any land so far away from Europe. The thoughts of my past and potential future triumphs still haunt me. O diary, how I wish to be back in France, to once again be the great leader I once was.
Translator's Notes/Summary: Despite what many may think; Napoleon's time on Elba wasn't horrible. He wasn't exiled to some deserted island where he was left to rot. There were people and government watching over him at most times.
